Clover in my lawn #907293

Asked June 25, 2025, 7:35 PM EDT

All of a sudden this year my front and back yard lawns are being taken over by clover. It's like an invasive plant takeover. Large sections of lawn are mostly clover. I've lived in this house for many years, but have not had this problem before this year. Can you tell me what's going on and what I should do about it. Thank you Ray

Expert Response

Hi Ray,

Thanks for reaching out. The rapid growth of clover often indicates low nitrogen levels in your soil, and a dense and healthy lawn will be the best defense against clover. Proper fertilization and lawn care (https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/lawn-care-calendar) should help.

Here's an article with more information: https://extension.umn.edu/weeds/dutch-white-clover Make sure it's not yellow wood sorrel, which is frequently mistaken for clover: https://extension.umn.edu/weeds/yellow-wood-sorrel

Good luck!
