Calla lilies #906696

Asked June 21, 2025, 2:08 PM EDT

I bought a pot of calla Lillie’s in bloom 2 months ago. The foliage died back and I was going to remove, dry out, and store the forms for next year but there appears to be new growth starting. Do I continue to store them or let them grow again?

Hi Cindy. Thank you for contacting the UNH Extension Yard and Garden Infoline about your calla lilies.

According to Iowa State Extension, "Each calla lily is designed to create a certain number of flowers, sometimes one or two and other times as many as six. Once those blooms have died off, the plant will only show foliage until the following spring" (p. 2). Here's the link to the full article:

Maybe you are fortunate and have a remontant hybrid or cultivar, a plant that will rebloom in a single growing season. The following article discusses this:

If you are able to visit the garden center/location where you purchased them, you could ask if they are a variety that will rebloom. The plant might be producing more foliage in response to the warmer weather we are experiencing. Calla lilies are hardy to warmer climates (zones 8-10). Here in NH, the rhizomes do not need to be dug up until the fall, so you have plenty of time to see what might happen.

I hope this information is helpful. Please reach out if you have further questions.
