Hydrangeas #906458

Asked June 19, 2025, 5:30 PM EDT

I’m attaching some pictures of my hydrangeas that I have in my front yard they get the morning sun, but for some reason, they seem to not have new growth on their prior years stems they grow from the bottom up. I’m not sure why this is happening. I think this is the second year this is happened The ones in my backyard fill out from the prior to your stems. Am I doing something wrong with these?

Expert Response

There are many different kinds of hydrangeas on the market and they do not all bloom on old wood. Some of them only bloom on new wood - some on both old and new wood.

If you saved the tags or know the variety of hydrangea, you can learn the growth habit that is typical for that variety.

Once you see the new growth, you can cut off the old stems.

Also, this past winter we had some very cold temperatures with very little snow. We are hearing from a lot of people about plants they have lost.
