Clover in lawn #906279

Asked June 18, 2025, 2:09 PM EDT

How do I get rid of clover in my lawn naturally? I do not use chemicals. I applied Johnathan Green Corn Gluten and Fertilzer on April 20th but have not put anything on the lawn since. There are s few large patches of clover with clover flowers.

Hello Renee,

If you do not wish to use a chemical herbicide, you can physically remove the clover (dig it out) and reseed the bare areas. You can also place plastic over the clover patches to smother it. There are many sources touting vinegar-based herbicides as “weed killers” but this must be horticultural grade vinegar (higher acidity) and they do not really kill the root. They burn the greenery and leave the root so it may take many applications to completely deplete the strength in the root and kill off the clover.

You can use good cultural care methods to make the grass plants as healthy as possible in an attempt to choke out the clover. Here are good lawn care tips: https://www.canr.msu.edu/resources/go_green_lawncare_tip_sheet

Corn Gluten Meal is a natural pre-emergent germination inhibitor for crabgrass and will do nothing for perennial weeds like clover.

Good luck with your project.
