Basil rotation #904140

I read on the website that one should not plant basil in the same place unless 4 years have passed, but it doesn't explain why. Pests? Nutrients? If it is nutrient loss, wouldn't adding compost to the site allow one to plant basil in the same place--or even plant it there every 2 years let's say?

Thank you for your question for Extension. Yes, there are some benefits of crop rotation or companion planting for vegetables, including basil. The benefits include less insect problems and better soil health. I'm sure you can also obtain these benefits by fertilizing or adding compost to the area as you suggested.
