BEE RELOCATION #900464

Do you know of anyone who can relocate BEES without destroying the hive?

Prince George's County Maryland

Expert Response

A hive is the box beekeepers keep their honey bee colonies in, but if a nest of honey bees has set up camp in a wall void, only some beekeepers are willing to retrieve them. You can use the information on the linked Maryland State Beekeepers Association swarm retrieval list to look for local beekeepers willing to collect feral honey bees. If they are wasps instead of bees, some of those people also will handle them (they can't be relocated in that case, though), but mainly wasps would need to be dealt with by a pest control professional if they're inside a building. Fortunately, though it's too early in the year for communal wasp nests (like Yellowjackets) to have established of any notable size. (Honey bee colonies, in comparison, persist from year to year if they're protected from the cold. Wasp communal nests do not.)
