Squirrels eating all my plants #900435

Asked May 07, 2025, 11:32 AM EDT

all my tropical plants and other annuals are getting eaten by squirrels and maybe a few rabbits. what can I do? I did sprays and fencing and cover with a netting. then once I remove anything they destroyed. we use to have a dog and this was not an issue back then. I tried the owl and sound in the yard too.

Expert Response

Thanks for your question. Before I can answer it, I need clarification on a few points.

1). I would be very surprised if squirrels are eating your plants. Green plants are not an expected component of their diets. However, they do like to dig them up. Could you please clarify why you think that squirrels are actually eating your plants?

2). Rabbits certainly do munch on plants. Is it possible that rabbits are solely responsible for all the actual eating of your plants?

3). When you tried fencing, what was the fencing material and how high was the fence?

4). Is it possible that some of the plant damage may be attributable to deer?

I ask these questions because dealing with squirrels is very different from dealing with rabbits. Two different strategies are employed. This is why I need to determine who is the major culprit: squirrels or rabbits.

Many thanks for your time in responding to these requests. Thanks for consulting us.
