Preparing for grass after stump grinding #900285

Asked May 06, 2025, 1:56 PM EDT

We had a large Cottonwood tree removed in February this year and had the stump grinder and backfilled. How should we go about growing grass over this large area for the grass to match with our existing grass?

Expert Response

Hi Amy. While it's possible to grow grass after removing a tree, it will take some work.

Remove all wood chips, saw dust, etc., then add soil to the stump area, and a little additional soil mounded to compensate for some decay. Plant the grass, preferably sod, however, seed can work. Seeding is best done in September or early spring. Add slow-release turf fertilizer, and keep well watered. Look for signs of yellowing, indicating low nitrogen levels.

Thanks for your question.
