Can I grow broccoli or Brussel sprouts in shady conditions? Or in pots? #898891

Asked April 27, 2025, 12:50 PM EDT

Hello! I see your helpful tips sheet about how to grow broccoli, but it doesn't mention how much shade the plants can tolerate. My yard (in mid-west side of Michigan) is mostly shady. Would I be able to grow broccoli or Brussel sprouts successfully in partial or full shade? Also, would it be possible to grow them in pots rather than in the ground? thank you.

Hi Kristin, thanks for contacting Ask Extension.

Brussels sprouts are cool-season vegetables that develop best when planted in sunny locations. For successful cultivation of brussels sprouts, the plants need about 6 to 10 hours of full sunlight per day and 8-10 is probably better. Broccoli is also cool season and needs 6 to 8 hours of full sunlight. It can, however, suffer from too much heat. Both can grow in containers 5-gallon pot for each plant or 15-gallon pot for three plants. Check out the following link:

I hope this is helpful.
