Can you use galvanized metal for a raised bed container? Is it food safe?

Anne Arundel County Maryland

Expert Response

Hi- galvanized metal raised beds are considered generally safe for food crops. The small amount of zinc from the zinc coating that could leach out is not a problem for soils, plants, or people. We would not recommend growing blueberries because the low-pH soil required could increase Zn leaching.

Look for or request specific information from the manufacturer on the processes and galvanizing standards they use, and testing they perform.
