Soil Testing - Phone #894850

Asked March 19, 2025, 9:27 AM EDT

Caller wants to know about preparing soil for Highland Cattle. She wants to get her soil tested and asked for information about how to do that. She also wants to know if she drops off the soil sample, instead of mailing it, will that expedite her request?

Expert Response

Hi, Beth -- Thank you for reaching out to the UNH Extension Yard and Garden Infoline about soil testing your acreage for cattle.

Here is the link for the UNH Soil Testing Services homepage, which has the address to send the sample to, as well as information on best practices for submitting a soil sample and other resources: UNH Soil Testing Services

And here is the link to the submission form specific to home yards and garden: UNH_soil submission form_Home Grounds and Garden  Since you are interested only in testing soil acidity, note that you can request the pH Only $8.00 test (on form).

Dropping off your sample to the drop off box on campus will eliminate the time it takes the mail to get to the lab. However, once received it goes into the soil testing queue. The general UNH Soil Testing Services link above includes information for where to locate drop off box.

Note also that April/May are the busiest months for the lab. Please expect a three week turnaround time.
