Dirt Spots and Bumps in Yard #894265

Asked March 12, 2025, 6:19 PM EDT

Hi, We had new grass turn put in about three years ago. We now have all these bare spots in our front yard despite fertilizer, sprinklers, etc. The yard is also very bumpy. Do you happen to know what this is and what we could do about it? Thanks, Melissa

Expert Response

Good Morning Melissa,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

From viewing your photos, at this time of year, it is difficult to determine why the spots are there. Do you have pets? Are these high traffic areas? What did it look like in the fall? Are the spots in the shade or full sun?

Please click on the following link from the U of M Extension Yard and Garden website: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/lawn-care-calendar This website discusses lawn maintenance during the year to keep your lawn healthy.

The last half of the summer of 2024 was very dry. Here is another link about lawn recovery after a drought: https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-news/recover-restore-and-maintain-your-lawn-after-drought

I will also mention the newer alternatives to lawn turf grass. Turf grass is a sterile environment for nature. Various chemicals applied to the turf grass makes it additionally toxic to our pollinators. Our insects and pollinators are becoming extinct at an amazing rate.
