Expert Response

hey Lauri – I assigned this to Derek Plotkowaki who will answer this formally, but I did find this info online:

Michigan: MATERIALS REGULATED: Roots, cuttings or plants of currants and gooseberries,

Ribes spp.

RESTRICTIONS: Sale of black currant, Ribes nigrum, roots, cuttings, or plants is

prohibited statewide. Sales of other currant species and gooseberries are also regulated

for counties in the white pine blister rust control area – see map on the MDARD web site

at http://www.michigan.gov/pestquarantines . Rust-resistant Ribes varieties may be obtained

under special permit if approved by Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural

Development. Applications for Ribes permits may be obtained from MDARD by

contacting Amber Neils, Export and Compliance Program Specialist at <personal data hidden>;

email <personal data hidden>.

Hello,

Wexford County is in the white pine blister rust control area. You will need a permit to plant black currant anywhere in the state as well as other Ribes species in the control area. You can learn more about the necessary permits here: https://www.michigan.gov/-/media/Project/Websites/mdard/documents/pesticide-plant-pest/planthealth/white-pine-blister-rust-resistant-variety-map.pdf?rev=5f5f48975e2947ccb25006803e9afb22
