Trying to find very specific plants #894155

Asked March 11, 2025, 6:31 PM EDT

Hello My WSA Team is working on an Educational Tidal floating wetland for our capstone project to be deployed at Quiet Waters Park here in Maryland this spring/summer, we would love to have plants by about mothers day at latest, if that is possible? If your team can let us know of availability and/or if you can get any/all of these or not ASAP, it would be extremely helpful, these are the last 2 species that we are having a very hard time locating for the project to move forward. We would prefer these in 6" rounds or smaller and could even use plugs if that's all that can be found, but please do still let us know if or how you can acquire them if not that size. or even if you may have any leads of where we should try to find these, would be of great help! (4X)Sea Lavender (Limonium carolinianum) (4X)Saltmarsh aster (Symphyotrichum tenuifolium) Thank You in advance for all your time and effort on this matter! my contact info is below:

Expert Response

Extension doesn't have a facility/nursery that grows plants for donations or for sale, though occasionally Master Gardener groups propagate edible plants or native plants for special fundraising events. We recommend that you inquire with area native plant nurseries to see what their availability is, as Extension does not keep track of what each nursery grows and offers, nor do we recommend particular businesses. However, native plant source lists (for both local stores and mail-order companies) can be found on the web pages of these two resources:

Thnx for your time and effort and for this thoughtful response (not just a copy n paste can'd reply ;)  )

It is unfortunate Maryland native plant species like these are so hard to source here in their native land,  I do hope my mass of inquiries all about will stir or pique some interest and even encourage more interest and availability of such types of beautiful Maryland native plants here in MD itself lol sigghhh...?!?!?

If you sent this response more than a couple days ago, we apologize for a delayed response...Ask Extension has been acting up lately and seems to be not sending us client replies in a timely manner sometimes. Their IT team is working on fixing the problem.

You're welcome. The state's new Maryland Native Plants Program (shared between the Dept. of Ag., UMD Extension, and the DNR) is working to improve in-state nursery awareness (for shoppers) and availability (for shoppers and nurseries) of locally-native plants. It will take time to get nurseries selling natives listed as providers of qualifying material (the MDA's Maryland's Best Native Plant Program), as well as to collect and share information on propagation techniques and seed sources that can help Maryland nurseries build up more inventory for the public to buy. We definitely have seen a steady rise in home gardener interest in using native plants this past decade or two, and as more information becomes available and readily-accessible for people to research, it should be easier for gardeners to incorporate these plants into their gardens.
