I purchased 3 hellebores today and don’t know if I can plant them now with the weather dipping down to the lower 20’s at night in se portland oregon. I would put leaves around them for mulch.

Hellebores are tough plants. You’ll notice they lay down in freezes, then stand up again. You could plant them now, as the soil isn’t frozen beyond the surface. Watering well at planting is important to set soil against the roots. I have my hoses disconnected, so I’d be hauling buckets of water, which is why I’d be waiting to plant a week or two (popping the pots in my garage at night). Your choice.
Do keep pots watered in this cold weather, as dehydrated roots are more sensitive to freeze damage.
