Heavenly Bamboo Question #889823

Asked November 14, 2024, 11:10 AM EST

Hello! My husband and I recently purchased property with a couple "Heavenly Bamboo" bushes on it that now have berries. I have read conflicting reports online about it being invasive/poisonous. Should we take it out or leave it? Thoughts and recommendations are welcome. Thank you!

Expert Response

Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica) is indeed considered both invasive and poisonous. Birds and animals easily spread the numerous red berries it produces resulting in them growing in areas outside your yard. These berries also contain cyanide and can be deadly if consumed in large quantities. The articles linked below provide additional information on this plant and alternative shrubs to grow. https://www.buncombemastergardener.org/non-native-invasive-plants-nandina-domestica-heavenly-bamboo/ https://nc-ipc.weebly.com/nandina-domestica.html
