Hi Susanne,
Thanks for reaching out to the UNH Extension Infoline. The best time to prune most trees and shrubs is in the late dormant season- usually between February and early April. This is because while plants are still dormant during this time, the coldest weather is usually behind us which can damage newly trimmed trees.
