When to prune a dwarf weeping cherry #889306

Hi there - I live in southern NH and have a beautiful dwarf weeping cherry. I know it needs pruning, but I'm getting conflicting information online. Do I prune it now, in the fall, or right after it blooms in the spring. I know I need to take off dead wood and crossed branches, and keep the weepers off the ground, but am not sure about timing. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi Susanne,

Thanks for reaching out to the UNH Extension Infoline. The best time to prune most trees and shrubs is in the late dormant season- usually between February and early April. This is because while plants are still dormant during this time, the coldest weather is usually behind us which can damage newly trimmed trees.
