How to winterize a plumeria #888355

Asked October 20, 2024, 6:24 PM EDT

Hello, I got a plumeria plant this summer and it grew from just a root to a beautiful plant with lots of green leaves. I'd like to know how best to winterize it and get it through the colder months. I pulled it inside before the past few nights where it's gotten below 40 degrees but I'm not sure what to do next. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Sara

Hi Sara,

Plumeria is a tropical plant so bright south facing windows and higher humidity are best. You can review the care guide from University of Wisconsin for details.

Depending on the species or hybrid, it may lose its leaves in the winter and require a dormant period to bloom successfully again in the spring. P.rubra is commonly grown as a house plant but will need a cool period. You can put it in a cool room like a basement or a garage where the temperature doesn't get below 55 degrees Fahrenheit.  When new growth appears in the spring it can be moved to a sunny window until the temperatures are warm enough outside again.
