rooted sweet potato vines #888313

Asked October 20, 2024, 6:46 AM EDT

I have rooted several cuttings from my sweet potato vines in water. I grew the original plant in a tall pot and have harvested several tubers. I work the Severna Park Plant Clinic at the Market and would like to share cuttings with our visitors. I've never done this before and would appreciate advice that I can share with anyone who wants cuttings from the vine, rooted or not yet rooted. Thank you!

Expert Response

Hi,

Since sweet potatoes are a warm season vegetable, we are not sure if the rooted vines are sustainable over the winter. You can try to overwinter them with grow lights, either in soil or water, but it will be an experiment. You can tell anyone you are giving some to the same. We suspect that they might die over the winter, but try it and see what happens!

Let us know how it goes!
