Orach #888121

Asked October 16, 2024, 8:37 PM EDT

I have tried to grow orach multiple times from seed and haven’t had anything germinate. I’ve tried a few different sources for seed, soaked seeds as directed, tried spring and fall. I don’t have the best luck with spinach either so I figured I would try orach since it’s more heat tolerant. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? I have grown other vegetables successfully in the same areas. Thanks!

Expert Response

Although we don't have extensive experience yet with that crop, orach should be fairly easy to germinate, with expected emergence in about 7-14 days if the seed isn't buried too deeply (only about a quarter-inch). Perhaps it's timing or temperature? Cooler temperatures can help with orach germination rates (cooler than for most other veggies), in the range of 55-65 degrees F. (Cornell suggests 50-65 degrees.)

Thanks Miri! I will try again early spring and perhaps sow seeds from a few different sources in the same bed to experiment.
