Repotting flower branches #886143

Asked September 22, 2024, 10:41 PM EDT

I am about to repot a green plant that is somewhat cactus- like. It had doubled in height and produced 2 branches since we bought it. I would straighten the tall part. Do you think the little branches can be removed and potted successfully? How would you do it?

Thanks for contacting "ask extension" with your plant propagation question.  From your picture, I believe you have a species of Kalanchoe. The recommended time to propagate this plant is in early spring to autumn. Here are the steps:
1. Using a clean, sharp knife, make a straight cut as close to the base of the stem as possible.
2. Trim the shoot to about 2 inches long, removing the leaves from the bottom 1/2 inch of the stem. Leave the cutting in a warm dry place for about 24 hours to allow it to callus.
3. Prepare a 3 inch pot with gritty soil mix (3/4 gritty cactus soil mix and topped with fine grit.) Insert the cutting into the potting mix so that the leaves are just clear of the surface. They should root in one to two weeks.
Good luck with your project!
