Pleaching is a technique that is considered "difficult" by the Royal Horticultural Society. It takes several years to create a pleached hedge. A good example of a pleached hedge is at Downtown Home and Garden in Ann Arbor. It consists of hornbeam trees. I'm not sure which species. It is probably either the native Carpinus caroliniana or the European Carpinus betulus. Either is a good option in Wayne County.
You could also look at little leaf linden (Tilia cordata). Little leaf linden is often called a "lime" tree in British books on shaping trees.
You can experiment with other types of trees for pleaching, but these are the most traditional and should do well in Michigan.
