Maple Tree Bark Peeling #879912

Asked August 02, 2024, 1:38 PM EDT

We have a 45+ year maple tree in our front lawn that has multiple large vertical tears on the bark around the trunk of the tree. Do not see any holes or insect tunneling. It looks like sun scald, but wondering if it is something else and how best to treat?

Expert Response

Sadly there isn’t any treatment except to keep the tree as healthy as you can by making sure it gets enough water. This is challenging when temps are so high. Always check soil moisture before watering and check the soil moisture at a depth of 2-4 inches everyday until the temps cool off. Of course that isn’t necessary after a rain. The soil should be damp but not soggy. Trees have to wall off damage from the inside and they can live for many years with large cracks.
