Wanting to go pinon picking this season and unsure where to go? #879342

Asked July 29, 2024, 9:09 PM EDT

I live in SLC, Utah and am looking for a place nearby or in nearby states to pick pinon. Any popular places your aware of? Or just good places to pick? I know Pie Town, New Mexico has some but were looking for somewhere closer.

Adams County Colorado

Expert Response

I have been told that some of the best places to harvest pinon pine nuts in Colorado include the Sangre de Cristo mountains in Costilla, Alamosa, and Saguache counties. Fremont and Chaffee counties (several people mentioned the Buena Vista area in Chaffee county) also are good places. The headwaters area of the Arkansas river is popular. Others also mentioned the foothills around Colorado Springs.

Hopefully this gives you some options worth looking into. Good luck!

Awesome thank you so much. We are thinking of staying in Pagosa Springs for a couple days so hopefully that puts us in the general area.
