What are the spots on my pear leaves #878951

Asked July 26, 2024, 5:36 PM EDT

My European pear tree espalier has developed dense dark spots on leaves on several branches. I'm wondering what the pest is and how to treat it.

Hi Art and thanks for your question about the spots on your pear leaves. This looks like pear scab, a fungus infection that overwinters on infected fallen leaves or twigs. The recommendation for control is:

  • Apply nitrogen (urea) to leaves in fall to enhance decomposition of fallen leaves and make them more palatable to earthworms.
  • Shred fallen leaves with a flail mower to help speed decomposition of infected leaves.
  • Pruning out infected twigs also offers some benefit.
  • Applying dolomitic lime after leaf drop in fall to increase soil pH also helps reduce inoculum the next spring.
  • Reduce irrigation sets so leaves do not stay wet for extended periods of time. Use sprinkler heads that do not wet the foliage of the tree or use drip irrigation.
There is only one spray available for home use: Bonide Fruit Tree and Plant Guard RTS is registered for home use, but also contains an insecticide in addition to a group 7 + 11 fungicide. Do
not use within 21 days of harvest.

If you go the spray route, be sure to follow the directions EXACTLY and you will be wiping out a lot of insects that may keep other pests under control.

You may just want to sacrifice this year's crop and concentrate on sanitation of leaves for next year. Finger's crossed we don't get the wet weather that leads to this problem!
