At the end of my driveway, the ground slopes down and the trees on the side create a lot of shade. Grass grew there until the trees got larger. Now there is just dirt heading into the backyard. What can be planted on the ground that would survive water cascading down and tree cover most of the day?

Susan - Can I recommend that you provide one or two photographs of the targeted area for replanting advice to the Prince William (PW) Master Gardener Help Desk.
You can email your photos to: <personal data hidden>
The MG Prince William Help Desk will be the closest location should you be interested in picking up a soil test from the PW VCE Extension Office. A soil test would allow you to consider if any soil amendments might be needed to optimize your site for new planting.
Ground covers could be a potential solution to help to reduce soil erosion. Here is a link which describes a number of possible choices:

The Prince William MG help desk will be in the best position to support any follow-up requests to help you identify the right plant in the right spot.
