Flame Weeding #878482

Asked July 23, 2024, 5:50 PM EDT

I have morning glory plants in my back yard that I want to get rid of permanently. I saw your video on Flame Weeding. In the video it said it would kill the root of the plant and presumably the plant would not regenerate. My alternative is a chemical killer for ivy and blackberries. I would like to try torching the plants if it would be more effective than spraying with a chemical. There is nothing else in the yard except for dirt. Last year the morning glory intertwined with all my vegetables. I need to get rid of the morning glory. It spreads horizontally all over the ground and has a small white flower.

Thanks for your question.

I have had both good and bad experiences with flame weeding. In situations where the weeds are isolated from other desirable plants, it works great. In this context, I have often used this technique in removing weeds from between sidewalk pavers.

However in situations where weeds are in closed proximity to desirable plants, flame weeding will lead to damage to these plants.

In other words, flame weeding is very situational.
