Patches of grass in back yard. #878458

Asked July 23, 2024, 3:51 PM EDT

Master Gardener, Can you tell me what type of grass this is?? I have six circles of this which is a different color and texture than the other grass. The grass also has a shallow root system.

Douglas County Colorado

Expert Response

Based on your description of its behavior and what I can see in the photo, I suspect that you're dealing with roughstalk bluegrass; a weedy species with very shallow roots that tends to brown out once the weather is hot, no matter how much you water.

We'd need a sample of grass to confirm that ID, but this article from our Extension colleagues at Purdue cover some more of its anatomy and landscape issues: https://turf.purdue.edu/roughstalk-bluegrass/

I hope this is helpful!

Cordially,
