How can we get rid of Japanese Beatles

Washington County Minnesota

Expert Response

Hi Gary,

We can’t get rid of them. They’re here to stay. We need to learn to live with them, as people on the East Coast have been doing for many years.

Many of the chemicals that kill the beetles hurt pollinators and other good insects. Traps are no longer recommended; they attract more beetles than they kill.

The best technique to limit plant damage is to knock the beetles into buckets of soapy water, drowning them. In the morning they move slowly and this is easy to do.

If you see a beetle with a white dot on its body, leave it alone. Thats the egg of a winsome fly, a natural enemy of the beetle that will help control their population.
