Karen,

The way I would approach management of this invasive weed is by first controlling the spread of the weed itself. We don't want the problem to continue to expand. First, they should keep the plants from reaching a stage in the growth where there is flowering, setting, and spreading of any additional seeds. Once the weed goes to seed, it will drop or spread seeds into the surrounding areas causing the problem to proliferate.

You'll also want to make sure that any field areas that mowers, rakes, or other field equipment that go into this area are not moved immediately into "clean" areas of the field. Controlling the spread of the weed is the 1st step.

Next, you could consider applying an herbicide in the field to kill the target weeds that are becoming out of control. A good broadleaf spray will kill the weed but also other valuable crops as well like Alfalfa or clovers (if grown). For a non-chemical control option, consider evaluating the current pasture/forage stand. If the stand quality has been on a downward trend, or it has been a few years since the stand has been established, consider tillage and crop rotation as an effective way to control the weed.

If you choose to till and replant the field, consider different cover crops that are effective at weed controlling such as: buckwheat, sorghum sudangrass, or ryegrass. Establishing a nice mixture of cover crops will work to out-compete the weed.

As always, understanding the health of your soil is the best starting point. Consider getting a soil test with a pH analysis. If your soil test shows nutrient levels or pH at levels outside of where cover crops thrive, amend the soil as necessary.
