How to get rid of the Japanese Beetles in my rose garden? #877132

Asked July 14, 2024, 6:24 AM EDT

We got a lot Japanese Beetles this year in our rose garden. Is there a better way to get rid of them? I tried to catch them with a jar of soap water. Can I kill them before they come from ground?

Expert Response

Hello,
Japanese beetles are very active at this time of year.  Picking the adults off and throwing them away is an easy but tedious method of removing them.  Fine mesh netting is another option.
Chemical treatments are available but can impact valuable pollinators and other plants.
Read the labels thoroughly prior to buying and using.
Keeping the surrounding soil dry will help reduce adults from laying eggs that would eventually become larva that damage roots on many plants.
Once cooler weather arrives the adult activity will dwindle.  Eggs however are the changing larvae and winter over under ground waiting for next year.
