Saltwater Intrusion and CRP/CREP Eligibility #876537

Asked July 09, 2024, 4:14 PM EDT

If land was previously used for agriculture but is no longer viable due to saltwater intrusion or is currently being used for agriculture in that it is being planted but is not productive due to saltwater intrusion is it eligible for CRP/CREP programs, which require that land be "capable of being planted to an agricultural commodity"? How many years of attempted but failed planting would disqualify a landowner from choosing to participate in a CRP/CREP easement program?

Thank you for your patience. Unfortunately, our other Extension contacts do not know the answer to this question, and recommend you reach out to the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) directly to ask. We presume the MDA is aware of saltwater intrusion issues with regards to impacts on these types of scenarios and has taken this into account for incentive programs, but as a regulatory agency (where Extension is not), it may fall to them to determine how to handle SWI issues as they impact agricultural land use decisions.
