What type of Bee #876096

Asked July 06, 2024, 12:34 PM EDT

We have bees damaging garde fence wood.

Baltimore County Maryland

Expert Response

A carpenter bee initially made that damage to build its nest tunnel in the fence, and then a woodpecker did further damage to chip out the developing bee larvae (for food). Carpenter bee activity can be discouraged by repairing or replacing damaged wood and keeping it painted. Wood that is sealed/painted is less attractive to them.

Our page about carpenter bees provides further information about these bees as well as prevention and management options.
