Cherry tree with peeling bark #875028

Asked June 27, 2024, 6:34 PM EDT

We bought our house last July in SW Portland and there is a mature cherry tree (about 50 feet or so tall) on our property that has a section of peeled bark on the stem starting about a foot above the ground. The peeled area is southwesterly facing and seems to have occurred a few year ago. Despite the peeled section the tree seems otherwise healthy - there are abundant leaves and cherries and new sprouts are appearing at several points up the stem and also right at the base. We're wondering if the peeling signifies long term serious disease. Do we need to take down the tree? An arborist visiting our neighbor has suggested so. Thanks for your help!

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Iain.  Trees with severe bark damage, such as yours, often become hazardous, invite disease, and attract insects.  The holes in your tree's bark are indications that an insect is under the bark, probably laying eggs for a new generation.  Since we often recommend that a certified arborist be consulted for just these issues, I suggest that you take his/her advice, and remove it before it does serious damage.  Good luck!
