Daylilies turn brown after finish blossoming #875026
Asked June 27, 2024, 6:24 PM EDT
Hello! I have a group of 9 Stella de Oro daylilies that bloomed this year. I deadhead the flowers each year, removing the spent flower with the ovary on each, and snip off the stems which will turn brown anyhow. The daylilies get sun from morning until about 2-3PM. They are on a drip system which gives each plant 1 gal water every other day. The soil is measuring moist, not wet, with a soil moisture meter.
After blooming, however, the plants begin to develop brown leaves at the bottom of the plant and in the interior. I was hoping for continued bloom from this daylily variety, but the dying leaves, I think, rob the plant of energy from photosynthesis and keep it from reblooming. This is not the first year that this has happened but I put a lot of effort this year into fertilizing and deadheading.
Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Expert Response
This is common with daylilies. Leaves don't live forever and the plant will shed the oldest leaves and the ones in the innermost canopy. Plus the plant continues to produce new leaves during the season.
Fortunately, you don't need to do anything, except perhaps remove those leaves if you wish.
