Wind resistant plants /flowers/vegetables #874713

Asked June 25, 2024, 9:22 PM EDT

Hi, There’s a spot in my yard i would like to put container plants, but it had no barrier from the wind. I had borage there but i don’t know if it’s stem could handle a high wind. Is there a way I can reinforce it or train it? Otherwise would basil or sage or ground cherry in containers be okay there? If not, do you know which veg, herbs, or flowers would be able to hold up?

Expert Response

Hi Maria, thanks for the question.

Unfortunately, wind is not friendly to borage.  Borage needs protection from wind as does sage is also intolerant of winds. Choices will depend on soil conditions, amount of sun, drainage, irrigation, etc. Some good plants that may do well in the area include ornamental grasses (e.g. Panicum, Miscanthus, Fetuca Species et al.), Sea thrift (Armeria maritima), Sedums, Lavender (Lavendula spp.), marigolds (Targetes spp.) and zinnias (Zinnia spp.).

I hope this is helpful.
