How to grow Pinyon Pine trees in Bend, OR for pine nuts! #874346

Asked June 23, 2024, 8:33 PM EDT

Hello, I live in bend and am interested in growing pine trees for pine nut harvesting. I have read that Pinyon Pine is a good option for this. I'd like to learn more about pine nut trees that grow edible/delicious pine nuts and trees that would do well in Bend's climate. Where could I purchase good trees and what growing recommendations can you provide? Thanks! Hunter

Expert Response

basic info on the plant, including hardiness: https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/pinus-edulis
My searching pulled up this source for trees: https://nativefoodsnursery.com/pinyon-pine/
please note that the trees they are selling are a few inches tall, and do not bear until they are about 25 years old.
I hope this helps, Nicole
