Bug identification #874309

Asked June 23, 2024, 3:31 PM EDT

Quite a few of these on my balcony in Ellicott City. Just spotted them a few days ago. They are black with white spots. Just discovered they can jump several feet. Should I be worried? Do they bite? Should I kill them?

Expert Response

Pam, these are Spotted Lanternfly nymphs. They don't bite, but this is an immature stage of an invasive insect which should be reported to Md. Dept. of Agriculture:  https://extension.umd.edu/resource/spotted-lanternfly-home-gardens/

More information from U of Md Extension:
https://mda.maryland.gov/plants-pests/Pages/spotted-lantern-fly.aspx

After doing that, you can kill them by wiping them off your balcony or spraying them with a strong spray.

Good luck.  Thanks for contacting Ask Extension.
