clumping bamboo? #873716

Asked June 18, 2024, 8:38 PM EDT

I have always loved the idea of bamboo, but fear the invasive nature and having it run out of control.  Recently I stumbled on 'clumping bamboo' that claims to not have rhizomes that run wild.

I have a long property line on my acre that I though bamboo could provide good fast growing privacy 'fence' from the highway expansion coming soon.  I need to get height ideally 20-25' to do the best job.  I am located in Forney zone 8b.

Any experience with 'clumping bamboo'?  Thoughts about whether I'd be getting rhizome headaches and be overrun?

Expert Response

Thanks for your email.  You ask about whether we have any experience with clumping bamboo.  The answer is no.  Your link lists a variety of clumping bamboos with which we are not familiar.  As a volunteer at the Dallas Arboretum, I've seen the damage done by invasive yellow bamboo, and I know you are trying to avoid that.
In general, trying to create a screening wall/fence by straight row of a non-native plants could result in some headaches.  I'd suggest a more natural look with staggard plantings of native medium size trees such as easter red cedars, Yaupons, et. al.
Hope this helps,
