Spilled Wine Weigela Not Blooming #873358

Asked June 16, 2024, 7:06 PM EDT

My spilled wine weigela was planted last year.  It seemed to do fine over the winter, and I did not do any winterizing.  It is now mid-June and it still hasn't bloomed.  The foilage is beautiful - just no flowers.  Should I just give it another year to mature?  It gets morning sun and filtered afternoon sun.

Expert Response

Some plants do need a year or two to get settled into their new spot before they will bloom. I would give it at least another year. Weigela also needs at least 6+ hours of full sun to bloom well and develop the leaf color for which they are famous. If your plant is not receiving 6 continuous hours in the morning before it receives the part sun in the afternoon, it may not bloom as well. If this is the case, you might consider moving it to a sunnier spot.

Thank you.  I think its young age may be the issue.  Foliage  is gorgeous.
