North American Chestnut #873047

Asked June 13, 2024, 8:18 PM EDT

I have what I believe is a mature North American Chestnut tree in my yard. Is this something I should register or let someone know about? I understand they were wiped out a long time ago and are pretty rare.

Expert Response

Unfortunately it is much more likely to be a Chinese Chestnut, as they're widely planted and have escaped cultivation in some areas.

You can use the  VA Tech dendrology key to separate the two species: https://dendro.cnre.vt.edu/dendrology/idit.htm

The American Chestnut Foundation has several ID keys on their website to differentiate one species from another.

If you would like to send us a close up of the leaves we can try to help as well.
