Terracotta pots #873000

Asked June 13, 2024, 3:39 PM EDT

Hello Master Gardner, I am growing crackerjack marigolds from seed in a number of different pots (outside). One set of seeds was planted in a terracotta pot. All the pots sit in the sun in the same area all afternoon. I am noticing that the crackerjack marigolds in the terracotta pot are more advanced - noticeably larger, taller, growing more quickly. Why is this? Are terracotta pots better to use for all plants or only some? What are the advantages to terracotta pots? Why would one seek out planting in a terracotta pot versus a plastic or ceramic pot? Thank you! Michelle

Thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.

Terra cotta pots tend to stay warmer than plastic pots and that may be why the plants are bigger, especially started from seeds.

Terracotta garden pots are more porous than plastic. This allows water and air to pass through more easily, allowing the plant roots to 'breathe' and preventing common plant killers such as root rot. a plant that prefers to stay on the dry side will appreciate a clay pot that absorbs excess water.

I find that once it gets hotter, you need to be more aware of how fast the pot dries out.

So to answer your question, it will depend on the plant whether terra cotta is the answer.  There is no right answer to the type of pot.  It will depend on the plant, where it’s located, etc.
