Gomphrena issue #872927

Asked June 13, 2024, 11:19 AM EDT

Hello, I have gomphrena growing in our cut flower garden and it has developed what looks like a fungus on the leaves. Could you please help me identify it? How would you recommend treating this?

Expert Response

Gomphrena is an old fashion flower that is easy to grow, tough and drought resistant.
Globe amaranth cultivars are susceptible to powdery mildew, gray mold, and fungal leaf spots during prolonged cool, damp weather but generally do not have many pest problems.

Powdery Mildew is most problematic in shady, humid, areas with poor air circulation, so give your plants good air circulation. Remove infected leaves to reduce the spread. The fungal spores overwinter on plant debris, so clean up the beds in fall.
Fungicides containing sulfur, lime-sulfur, neem oil, or potassium bicarbonate can be applied as a preventive or treatment method, following the instructions on the product packaging.
