Kay, Thank you so much for your help. I hope the group can make a suggestion for the correct fungicide to help save my trees. Hello everyone. I have attached 3 photos of the damage to my Blue spruce trees. I hope you can help me pick the products to save them. At first I thought it was to much ground water, but then the ones growing on high ground began to have the same issue. I’ll be sending a 2nd mail with damage to my white pines. I’m afraid the files will be to large if I put them on one mail. Thank you in advance for your assistance. David David Fredette 16585 Robinson Road Marysville OH 4304<personal data hidden>

Expert Response

Dear David and Kay,

This is Rhizosphaera Needecast. It is a fungus and I have been battling it myself for a decade in my landscape. It is caused by the fungus Rhizosphaera kalkhoffi. Starts in the lower branches and progresses up the tree.

Research has shown that the fungicide containing chlorothalonil has been effective in controlling the disease. Properly timed applications are the key. Two applications for two to three consecutive years. The first after bud break and the second three to four weeks after the first.

Avoid pruning during wet periods. Remove the fallen needles and the lower branches that are touching the ground. Trim some areas in the trees to allow good air circulation and always sterilize your equipment.

Go to: https://u.osu.edu/ornamentaldiseasefacts/nursery/rhizosphaera-needle-cast/what-is-it-what-to-do-about-it and https://ohioline.osu.edu  and search for HYG-3059-96 Titled  "Rhizophaera Needlecast on Spruce". Both these sources can better inform you of the disease.

Personally I am still loosing two blue spruce trees but one dwarf blue spruce shrub is doing great!
