Possible Spongy Moth Infestation #871445

Asked June 04, 2024, 4:45 AM EDT

Hello! I am a resident of Esopus, NY. I am abroad right now, but I'm submitting this on behalf of my dad who is home. This year he has noticed a lot of caterpillars. They've been eating plants in the garden and one of our large black walnut trees has been completely defoliated and others have been partially. I think it is the Spongy Moth but I'd like to confirm. I would also like to know what can be done to control the infestation and how we can help the trees, both ones that are already impacted and others nearby. I am particularly worried about the one that has been completely eaten. Black walnuts have a very short season to photosynthesize and it does not have a single leaf left on it. I've attached some photos of the caterpillar and the damaged trees. Thank you!

Hi Lauren

Yes, spongy moth is terrible this year. From what we understand, we are in year two of a three year cycle. I'm so sorry to hear about your dad's black walnut.

I've attached an information sheet with some suggestions for managing the infestation (though it's very difficult since even if you're managing them, they will still migrate in from your neighbors). With any luck, the infestation may be over by the end of June, fingers crossed.

Keeping your trees as healthy as possible is important at this time, so deep watering during dry spells this summer and fertilize your trees. This can help during next summer when we most likely will experience another round of the infestation (bad news, I know).

Thank you,

Catherine
