When to remove bamboo stake and plastic guard cylinder around tree trunk area #871292

Asked June 03, 2024, 12:18 PM EDT

Hi, I planted a new Sugar Maple Fall Fiesta tree last fall and I'm wondering when do I remove the white cylinder protector around the trunk. It is about 2 feet tall and the tree is about 7 to 8 feet tall. The trunk is about 2 inches in diameter. The cylinder is about 6 inches in diameter. Also when to I remove the bamboo pole next to the tree. The bamboo pole came with the tree in the pot. See picture. Thanks, Greg Vassar

Expert Response

The bamboo pole is only to stabilize the tree at the beginning. Remove it and if the tree stands on its own, only swaying in the wind, it is no longer needed. The plastic cover is to protect against varmints eating the bark in winter and possible sun burn. Remove it now and replace it next fall. When the tree is a few years older, discontinue the use of the tree wrap. See these fact sheets also.
