Newly planted tree #870835

Asked May 30, 2024, 5:39 PM EDT

Hello - I just had anew tree planted in my yard, an Asian Lilac that is about 10 feet tall and has a 2" trunk. I was told by the nursery I bought it from not to put mulch around the tree until after the first year of growth. They did not give me specifics as to why this should not be done other than to allow for roper watering and establishing the root system. I understand how to properly mulch a tree keeping the material away from the trunk and no more than 4" deep etc. What are your thoughts on this ? Can I mulch the tree or take the nurseries advice --Thanks

Hi Dan,

I can't think of any reason not to apply light  (2 inches) of mulch around the root flare, the wider the better. Don't put it any thicker.  I have seen so many trees with thick wood mulches that mat up forming a solid layer that doesn't allow water to penetrate . Sounds like you already know to keep mulch several inches from the tree trunk.

Keeping grass away from your tree is very helpful as it tends to be a water hog.

Happy mulching,
