Hi John,
It's not bad to let your grass go to seed. It's not really going to re-seed itself though. If you are after more grass seed it's much more effective to buy it and seed it yourself. Grass would take around four months to seed and then you are not sure if it actually made contact with the soil.
Letting it go to seed can result in a slightly thinner lawn which may be good or bad depending on what you want.
