Is it too late to plant potatoes? #869391

Asked May 21, 2024, 12:22 AM EDT

I wanted to order some seed potatoes but figured it might be too late to start them. Is that the case?

Potato foliage grows best during relatively cool weather. If you can find solid seed potatoes that have just begun to sprout it would be possible to plant them asap. Yield may be somewhat reduced. If garden space is at a premium you will probably get better results planting warm-season crops like bean or cucumber. Don't buy and plant potatoes from a supermarket since they may spread disease and be difficult to sprout.

You may have better luck growing sweet potatoes from slips. They prefer warmer weather, and fertile, well drained and "light" soil" in a sunny area. You can also eat sweet potato leaves (*Asian cooking).  Do NOT eat regular potato leaves!
