Pear Tree with Fungus #869227

Asked May 20, 2024, 11:14 AM EDT

Have this orange fungus(?) on our Barlett & Anjou pear trees this year. Is it a rust fungus? How should we deal with it?

Wake County North Carolina

Expert Response

This appears to be cedar-quince rust that can affect pear trees.  This fungal disease requires two different hosts to complete its life cycle.  Recommended control measures include planting resistant varieties, pruning out and disposing (not composting) of infected fruit and twigs, and using a fungicide as a preventative prior to the opening of the leaf and flower buds.
